However beginning tomorrow things will finally warm up into the 70s and even low 80s, a major improvement over what we had the last couple weeks.

Finally have most of the lost scene reconstructed. Ye, it is a fairly tricky one from the point of how the figures are posed and relate to each other and the lighting. Still have to adjust a few surfaces and lights to look right, though I love the Supershine Shaders and Topcoat effect which really works well for vehicles.

no plaint's 'cept the usual about always having to sign back in on the forums just about every day now even though I'm already loggd in at the store (using the same sign in page - haven't sen the forums one for months now).

Question, anyone know where I can find a good cigarette smoke prop (preferably a "Jepe-like" one instead of PS postwork brushes as those are a pain to convert to use with Gimp or PSP). I have an old cigarette and smoke prop I found years ago created by SnowSultan, but for some reason when I try to load one of the smoke planes, 4.6 screams at me that it can't find the geometry. The Runtime folder in the installer only included a Libraries and Textures folder

If you have the textures, could you apply them to a plane primitive?

Do ya suppose you'll be making two textures for the faaaaangs? One bright and new and clean, and the other all yellowed and plaque covered? :3

That's merely a shader applied at this point; I'm going to do a proper texture, of course, but I wanted to nail stuff like SSS and velvet etc first. :)

...not sure as they supposedly are already applied to a plane. Just that 4.5 seems to be expecting a Geometry file that was never supplied. In the Runtime/Libraries/Props folder, there are the following files for each:

    smoke[x].png
    smoke[x].pp2
    smoke[x].rsr.

Could be this was set up before there was both Poser/Daz compatibility, however with Jepe's FlameZ and SteamZ there is nothing that installs to a Geometries folder either and they both work fine in 4.6.

I just re-downloaded it and checked the internal files and yes, I didn't miss installing anything as there is no Geometries folder so it is definitely a Daz Studio issue. Bugger.

They use Poser primitives -- if you have any copy of Poser, I'm not sure whether the primitives are in the application installer or the content installer, but if you add that Runtime to DS under Poser Formats it should work.

kmw has been the instigator of at least two long running, multi-volume, threads. Clearly he missed his vocation in network TV.

Heh. If you're talking Mad Men or Breaking Bad, that's quite the compliment.

Of course, if you're talking 2 Broke Girls or Whitney ... how dare you, sir?!?

...do not have Poser installed yet as I need to set up Flash Player (which seems to update more often than one changes their socks) so the libraries work properly. Any way into faking it to accept Daz Primitives?

Woo got the email saying my package has shipped :D

Though it's all in Japanese. Can't read it :B
I do know it is in transit though. Checked my account and it's got the tracking all up and stuff.

I am a bit confused with this though:
    Estimated Arrival: June 5, 2013

Um... That seems a bit wrong somehow... No way can Standard International Shipping be that fast - especially since I only placed the order a few days ago ^^

Try following the comment from "John", KK... create a DAZ plane (Create -> New Primitive -> Type: Plane, size whatever seems appropriate)... select the thing, Surfaces tab, Opacity Strength pulldown, and Browse... to wherever you unzipped the file. Playing with Diffuse Colour then allows you to do different colour smoke, and the plane can be rotated/scaled/transformed wherever you need it relative to the camera position.

(ETA: just making a sample swatch now following the above procedure... overtaken by events - swatch is on next page... >_<).</p>

Yep, they are (and if you parent them carefully, you _may_ be able to get them to automatically be orthogonal to the camera... though I'm not 100% sure about transforms...).

Here's the first 9 - by default, when you load them into the Opacity field only, they may be a bit too "wispy"... to make them stand out in front of the bricks a bit more, I put the same texture into each of the Opacity Strength, Bump Strength and Reflection Colour fields, in an attempt to make them a bit more "solid". Alternatively, I would guess you might want to combine two or three of the textures together (or stretch them out a little taller than wide - these are all square planes I've put them on...). ymmv v(^_^)v.

In Cinema 4D there's the "Target" tag and "Face Camera" tag... And I think Carrara had something similar? ("Point At" I think?)
Unless I'm reading that wrong xD

Stan Winston died in 2008. The design has been around for 5 years?

Of course, all of this kind of thing owes a great deal to the art of Hajime Sorayama, and can be traced back to designs for the movie "Metropolis" (1927).

Oops, cross-posted with you due to my slow editing. Just for the fun of it, here's an old render of mine, my tribute to the Metropolis robot. I made the robot by doing unspeakable things to Vicky in Wings3D and rendering in Bryce. : )
