I can't imagine what it must be like to have a job one day and none the next. And I can't imagine how it must feel to be one of those people out on the front lines, whether a first responder, or someone risking exposure every day to make sure the rest of us have food in our bellies. Delivery drivers, cashiers, stockers, the people who shop for those of us getting home delivery...mailmen (mailpeople?:)...warehouse employees...those who continue to work to care for our fur babies...they are all heros.

I've been chatting with some friends in the same age group as I am (30-something) and parental stress is a giant thing right now. I'm home and my husband is home because we both work for the same company, but both of my parents are still working. We live in a duplex (us downstairs and my parents upstairs) so we're all in this together and whoever my parents interact with at work, by default we're also interacting with. The stress of that is horrible. My dad works for a company that supplies heating and cooling for hospitals, etc so they aren't shutting down any time soon and my mom works for a vet clinic and they're still open. In fact, she said they're busier than ever. She's still going to multiple stores to do her shopping while I'm doing all my shopping by delivery. Trying to get her to stop going to the store is an exercise in futility. They're saying Connectiut is likely to peak in the next couple weeks and I'm like "Mom, you CANNOT be going to the store..." and I've been pleading with her to get delivery. I even offered to buy her groceries for her. But she's picky and needs this specific coffee and that specific bag of chicken tenderloins. Whereas I'm of the mindset that I'll just take anything so I don't have to go to the store. Finally today she said she'd try to do delivery. Good lord I hope she does. I'm going to keep riding her about it because my 67yo dad is a major risk - heart patient and very recent ex-smoker (like seriously his lungs probably look like beef jerky).

You need to smack some sense into your Mom. Not only is she risking herself by not taking this seriously, she is risking you and your family as well. Show her videos of what italy has gone thru, what survivers have gone thru, it's scary stuff!

I have told all my employees that if they feel the slightist bit ill to stay home and not risk exposing whatever they have to other employees and even customers. I felt a bit off today with a slight fever so I called in to be on the safe side and I am feeling better after getting some more sleep, so it was probably stress related I hope.

She understands the seriousness of it, but she still wants to risk it to get the rando things she wants...going to Wal-Mart for their specific coffee and Aldis for frozen chicken, etc because she can't get all of it in one place. Today I told her that she can give me her shopping list and I'll find the stuff for her via delivery if it comes down to it. She told me she was able to order some of the stuff online so hopefully she's coming around. I told her I don't want her going to the store anymore. Period. It's bad enough now, but in a couple weeks it's going to be miles and miles worse. Yeah, ordering online is more expensive with fees and tips and whatnot, but at this point I don't care. I'll buy the stuff for her if I have to. And I'll have you know, I'm a good tipper. These people deserve it.

That's just herbivore propaganda... it's a ploy to lull you into a false sense of security.

That's right!  Some herbivores are faking it.  One of my sons told me that many are "opportunistic carnivores".  He then supplied me with video links (YouTube and others) showing deer, cows, squirrels, etc. eating dead mammals.  They are sneaky.  They try not to leave witnesses.  While you are practicing Social Isolation, don't trust your livestock.  Don't fall asleep outside!

...I've seen a few where deer actually eat live birds as well as beat people up..

Fear the Deer. those big brown eyes are just a ruse.

What is going on?  I mean when will it end?

edit not the end of the world but the end of the current crappy crisis (aka Covid 19)?

It's going to be a while, and will probably vary by location.

My guess (and it is JUST that) is that some of the restrictions may be relaxed after 7 to 14 days of steadily decreasing infection rates, and this will depend on regional population density. Unlikely to occur in April.

My current plan is to stay home (retired, living on IRA an Social Security, both direct deposit) and keep 17 to 21 days of supplies on hand in case I need to self-quarantine, and to visit not more than two stores one day a week for necessities. (current confirmed infection count in my county is 13 out of a population of 203,000 - the odds are in my favor).

Since so many of you seemed intrigued by my new invention, and I've received tens of thousands of emails expressing interest in Sponge-On-A-Stick™... I'm assuming I've received tens of thousands of emails... I mean I haven't actually checked my emails today, but it's a logical assumption based on the importance and innovativeness of this game changing product.

Anyway... I went and put together a prototype...

It's much more robust than the Ancient Roman models and has a carrying strap so you can take it wherever you go... the gym, work, hang gliding... anywhere you think you might poop, Sponge-On-A-Stick™ will be right there for you!

As you can see the Magic Fingers cleansing whiskers will work their way in to the deepest crevices for a scrubbing experience like you never experienced before!

Not only that but I'm including a bonus recycled toothbrush with every Sponge-On-A-Stick™...

These are trying times... why not try something new and kick the toilet paper habit today?

I read an article that says that "By the end of the summer, the pandemic will have directly killed 2.2 million Americans" that is frightening if even close to the truth considering we are only at 1288 deaths so far..

I am kind of curious how they can come up with those numbers. That seriously sounds like fear mongering, especially since the current number of deaths is under 2000.

Yeah, doesn't sound like sound reasoning to me either.  Somebody with an agenda.  In the whole world the death total today is only 30,000 and is already slowing down in China and even in the US.

There are way to many people trying to profit from panicing people during this crisis. My wife who lives in Washington State told me the stores have started posting signs telling people that they will not be accepting returns of items bought during this crisis for refund and suddenly it is easier to find TP and other cleaning supplies that people have been bying in bulk to horde.

All of the false press and misleading news stories remind me of the Yellow jornalism that caused the Spanish/American war. The last numbers I have been able to find is that there have been jsut over 1600 deaths in the Us but the news is reporting over 2000... Where are they getting their numbers from? Certainly not the CDC that has been posting the numbers.

They say the curve is already beginning to flatten here in Denmark, but we also closed down quite early and people have generally been very cooperative and sensible.

are you sure that a sponge?

They are actually called the Red Beard Sponge (Microciona Prolifera) and yes, they have very little spongin, the fibrous collagen protein that gives other species of sponges their flexibility and softness. This species of sponge has far more silica in its body, which would make it a bit rougher than other types of sponge traditionally used for bathing or craft work... but that makes it better than other sponges at removing stubborn materials from cracks and crevices. As long as these sponges remain damp, they are actually fairly soft, but once they dry out they become stiffer than regular sponges.

When they are still anchored to a reef or sea floor, they are actually fairly handsome lookin in most cases...

Sometimes they wash ashore still with a rusty red/orange tint... but mostly they are green/brown because they've been rolling about the bottom for a while before the wash up...

I'm thinking the red ones could be the premium model...

In the end they'll all be brown anyway, but whatever...

    Fun Sponge Facts...

-Sponges were the first creatures to branch off from the rest of the animal kingdom and go their own way.

-All sponges are filter feeders but some have evolved to become carnivorous... though it's not as scary as it sounds when you don't have a skeleton or teeth.

-Not all sponges live in a pineapple under the sea.

-Sponges can reproduce sexually and asexually through budding, but some sponges can be reduced to a slurry, filtered at a cellular level, redispersed and wherever enough of the cellular material collects, begin to reform an entirely new sponge from the individual cells.

-The Caribbean Fire Sponge contains a toxin that causes rashes in humans.

-Most sponges do not form lasting friendships with starfish.

-The study of sponges is (and I'm not making this up) called "Spongiology".

-Both Édouard Placide Duchassaing de Fontbressin and Robert J. Lendlmayer von Lendenfeld where notable Spongiologist in the 1800s, giving rise to the popular notion that only people with really long names can become Spongiologists.

-Bottlenose Dolphins in Australia have been observed using sponges to protect their snouts while foraging on the sea floor.

-Very few sponges are capable of singing or starring in Tony Award winning broadway musicals about true friendship, the value of science and not panicking during a catastrophe.

The prediction of 2.2 million was made under the assumption of: "In the (unlikely) absence of any control measures or spontaneous changes in individual behaviour". (Regarding the other assumptions I'm sure those can be found the report).

The imperial College wrote a report mid March (It is as far as I can see dated the 16. March 2020). I Don't know if I'm allowed to link to it, but I found it using the high tech google search internet machine thingie.

And that is part of what is stiring up the panic, people are cherrypicking info to post without stating sources or the formula for the numbers they are posting. The fact is that they ARE using control measures so posting articles like that are doing nothing more than fanning the flames of this panic.

There is no cherry picking here. Go read it and maybe also https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/world/europe/coronavirus-imperial-college-johnson.html.

The report prompted action, and UK and US took some actions to flatten the curve.

You misunderstood what I said, I said that people are cherry-picking information from sources like this and posting only the parts that will fan the flames. I couldn't read the entire article since I do not have a subscription to the New York times, but I saw enough that they were doing their own spin on it to sell papers. I am not one of those that think this is fake, but I am also nto one of those that think this will be over soon. I think this is going to be a threat well past summer and into fall before a handle is found to bring it under control but I don't think worldwide deaths will top a million and this report is saying 2.2 in the US alone.

People are too easy to panic anymore thanks to the internet, there are so many disreputable news sources' out there on the web that anything can be spun into a worldwide panic just to garner likes and follows so they can be the top trender in social media.

There are already reports of better tests that offer less ‘false negatives’ and clinical trials of new drugs that could offer a vaccine to stop it.

I also want to point out that most of these think tank type groups only work on ‘worst case’ scenarios, because that is what gets the most attention.

In times like this it is useful to remember the Wizard's First Rule:  "People are stupid.  They will believe anything they want to believe or are afraid might be true." (paraphrased from "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind)

It isn't about toughness, but about how your body reacts.
