The shop vac filter material makes a good mask material... sandwich it with a HEPA vacuum bag and you get more protection.

The best material is a high thread count like silk or even high count bed sheets (who needs a pillow case). The higher the count, the tighter it's woven, the better. If you cut the bottom third of a tshirt and fold it multiple times to make a six inch multi layered strip you can use rubber bands at the 1/4 point from each end of the strip, fold ends (the 1/4 part inward over the strip to cover the bands and use it as a mask.

All my material is in storage because the sewing room was one of the three upstairs room destroyed by a broken bathroom pipe. The good news is i got to trash the blinds I painted red & black after watching Pirates oif the Caribean and engaging in a rum - or three . . .

The vacuum material I used is 10x finer, more so when used with the HEPA material. Both are designed to trap micro particulate matter.  Technically with a carbon pad it could filter out certain aerosols. But only if it is a tight fit.
The problem with most cloth masks masks is they don't make a great fit... if there are any gaps such as over a cheek or over a low spot, that's where air will enter. I've been using respirators for years, and so many people don't even wear those properly, either crooked, loose, wrong size, or adjusted wrong... if any PPE isn't a good fit, it won't work... air takes the path of least resistance, and will always find a gap.

Actually, my first set of masks used small styrofoam bowls covered in duct tape with the bottoms cut off and filter material stretched over the opening.

The shape is similar to the white dust masks, because it covers the nose and mouth but the flexible styrofoam reinforced with duct tape makes a tight fit.

I didn't bother pursuing making a tutorial because it's too complicated for most people, even though a child could make one... that and the internet is already full of millions of expert ideas.

The duct tape version was crude, but workable...

The stupid cyborg head doesn't have a normal jaw shape, so it doesn't fit well on it, but on every human I test fitted it on it's a snug fit.

...well the local Ace Hardware has N-95 compliant masks for painting, but they decided to close down the other day and have only limited hours for whne they are open for pickup of online orders, however when I go to their site it notes "in store" purchases only, so a catch-22.

All the masks I've been buying are non-stretch cotton. You have to be able to breathe through these things and I have a hard enough time not freaking out when my head is under the covers. I can't imagine having to wear a mask for any length of time, much less one made with anything tighter than cotton. As these things are not creating an actual seal on your face, adding a filter seems kind of pointless to me but go all out if it adds an extra feeling of security. They're more meant to stop your mouth-breathing and coughs/sneezes from flying into the air to hit other people. What you do have to worry about are the idjuts still running around who don't care enough about other people to bother wearing masks to help protect you from them. Those are the ones who are still spreading this like wildfire.

For gloves, my mom has a seemingly endless supply at work and we found the stores here have packs of disposables where the dish gloves are.

  • Some alternative masks include rubber gloves, rubber condoms, nylon stockings or even fishnet stockings but I don't recommend them especially if you are going into a bank or convenience store to get some groceries or even making a good impression on a first date during these Covid-19 / Ebola Nezer Scrooge lockdown days.

  • Lots of entertaining videos on Youtube.com ... and some rather amusing 'what people are doing while home' videos.

This one has an idea for those who just can't make it out to the gym. [be careful to hold on to the counter though, don't need anybody falling]

8:30 for the treadmill anybody can make!

  • I have, for years, been using FFP3 masks in the workshop. Good against toxic fumes, toxic dust etc. and just about OK against sawdust and plastic swarf from the lathe. Seems they are considered the 'Gold Standard' here in the UK and all new ones are going to ITU personnel. Think I'll be hanging on to mine for a while.

We got news on Saturday that a lady we know in her mid 70's was on palliative care after catching covid-19 in hospital. Her husband had been brought in for a 15 min goodbye session while masked & gowned. It appears she is still in the land of the living having been thought unlikely to make it to Sunday. We hope & pray she'll make it. She's a tough old bird & maybe she'll prove it again.

....no issue with wearing 95 or FFP3 type masks.  Did so 40 years ago after the eruption of Mr. St Helens and again during recent wildfire outbreaks here in the Northwest. Even with a beard they tend to fit and work better than simple cloth ones which do nothing to protect you from those who don't wear one.

People can't purchase N-95 masks here - they are reserved for medical workers.

The point of cloth masks for general use is to protect others from you, though.

...if you saw how many people where I live don't bother to wear anything over their faces, you'd want one that protects both ways. I'm actually surprised that my state is one of the ones getting ahead of the curve given how many people I see walking around the city with their faces uncovered.

One thing that I have noticed though is people I see on the streets for the most part are maintaining proper social distancing (personally I tend to give more than the recommended 6' when I go out for a walk on a nice day)  This has been one of the reasons our state is flattening the curve, so much so that the governor sent unused ventilators to New York.  Our peak is supposed to occur in about six days from now and if the current rate of compliance and trend continues to hold. we will be on the downside of the curve by the end of he month However this doesn't mean everything will go back to "normal" as the state has extended the shelter in place as well as shutdown and social distancing orders into at least the middle next month to insure there isn't a rebound.

Here in CT our governor will be passing a mandate that masks must be worn in public because so many people just aren't. The specific details are said to be coming down in a day or so. You'd think given that we're in the hot zone people wouldn't need to be threatened with fines, etc.

Where are the masks??? In my small town in Arkansas you can't find them at the Walmart or the other store. Online are mostly ads for $50 masks and they look like websites that would steal your credit card info and rip you off. I wear a scarf but I'm not sure it does anything but get me in the store.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,260

    ...same here,

At that hardware chain I mentioned above, even the cheap 25 pack of disposable dust masks cannot be pre-ordered online.   The "catch" on the site says they have to be purchased "in store only" however when I went by the local branch the other day, there was a sign on the door that said they are open just two mornings a week for online pickup only, no "in-store" shopping permitted.
