right now, i'm tearing my hair out. Kwan and Haru are so awesome, i want them, i need them, my life is worth nothing without them - and i'm flatbroke (srsly, i have 2 5$ food coupons until 30.7)! aaaaarghhhhh! this sucks so bad, it's one of those moments where i throw all antimaterialistic thoughts in the wind and just wish i had a lot of $$$$. how many bits of soul can i sell for a 100$ daz GC?

anyways, they are pure awesome <3 - with Wufei and Chayton, who i'm really been waiting for impatiently, i'm gonna ruin myself as soon as i get paid.
and i really appreciate that 1) great male models (tho i must say recently, there has been a lot of effort to create many good male figures), and 2) Asian males, yay.

question: i quite like Tamati too, he's gonna be of the party too! i was wondering, could he pass easily for a Thai? it's what i thought he was first, before realizing the name wasn't really, and then the tats... and then reading the blurb, lol.

I'm with you it's just a giant tease (on my reduced COVID-19 budget)... I'd sell my blood for this bundle (or sweat like the gladiators do lol - but doubtful anyone would want it)... but only [if] they gave me a purple banner so the thing cost $58 ... the product is currently $98 for me ... other people are claiming to be getting a purple banner to select 3 extra bundles ... I doubt I'd get that - I rarely get a purple banner, and the couple times I did it was mis-matched to my interests.

You peaked my interest re: Thai comment - my understanding is that people migrated from southwestern China to mainland Southeast Asia around the 11th century - so how can you tell by name the characters ethnicity, do you have a way to reference names?

    Thank you

Oy - These are some good looking men! Haru, Tamati, and Kwan 8 (with his HD Add-On) "Out of the Box":

yup, this is the stuff my dreams are made of :D

now, how much harder on a system (a lame, old system) does this HD addon weight? i mean, how much longer does a render need compared to the standard figure? i never go over 2 sub on a NON-HD figure otherwise everything crashes/freezes... so while this looks excellent, i'm worried about buying an addon i'll never use (in fact, i have no HD addons at all yet)

Even at subD 2 the HD details will enhance the figure. By having the normal maps on, you can easily approximate the fine detail of a higher subD model.

so keeping the normal maps on will lag/freeze/crash my system less than using a higher subD or HD addon? because i often use scene optimizer, and there you can either/or/both delete or leave the normal maps, go up/down with subD etc - and i usually do both lower the subD level AND kill the normal maps. otherwise, crash & burn..

I don't know the answer to that, but generally normal maps are used to mimic HD without using the same amount of resources. They are used a lot in gaming for example.

I suggest you time a render comparing a subD2+ model without normal maps versus a subD1 with normal maps. And maybe also time for both subD and normals. That should give you a better idea of what will be optimal for your setup.

THE RENDER PANEL HAS CLOSED, I CAN'T SEE HOW LONG IT TOOK...

As Vagabond Elf pointed out, you can view the log to see how long the render took. "Go to Help" >> "Troubleshooting" >> Then hold Down Control and Click on "View Log File". (For some reason, it won't pull up the log unless you hold down Control while clicking on it. I think Richard explained to me once why it takes holding down Control to get it to open, but I can't recall exactly what he said.)

I don't have to hold down CTRL.  I just experimented with it, and CTRL-Clicking opens the folder the log file is in.  Just clicking "View Log File" simply launches Notepad and opens the log.txt file.  I'm still on D|S4.11, for whatever that's worth.

Also, thanks for the series of tests - I rarely use HD myself, but given the morphs came with this one, perhaps I'll experiment a little.

Weird, just clicking on it doesn't do anything for me. To get it do anything I have to hold down Control then click.

NP on the tests, I found them interesting. After I was like - Oops! Look at all that spam I did! lol So HOPEFULLY some will find it helpful. :) I was pretty surprised with some of the results. I'd love to see more tests like that, just so people can nail down the most helpful settings/setups for rendering different types of scenes (but in a different thread of course, I wouldn't want to hijack this thread more than I already have lol). For instance, it seems to me, based on my findings (if they can be duplicated with other characters and with other people's computers) that for creating mid-range scenes it might be best to use SubD 1 and turn off bump maps completely and just crank up the Normal Maps.

Okay, so that's the Kwan's. Overall, I can say I really like Kwan!  He looks fantastic, and is more realistic than a lot of DAZ store's recent figures. But I am seriously sad there are only 3. Where are the rest? This is the first bundle in a while where there is are no other character add-ons. This is particularly sad, because Kwan 8 is just.... Such an amazing character. Also where is the wrestling content? Not even a singlet? I'm okay with the sci-fi stuff, but... It would be great to at least have one wrestling outfit.

Welp. You wanted wrestling content, you got wrestling content. And another Kwan guy, even. (The least buff of the Kwans ... but one can probably just dial up more Kwan body to address that, if desired.) The Invincible outfit can sorta kinda vaguely maybe pass for an amateur outfit. If you make a transmap to cut it off at the knees, anyway. Kind of surprised that they didn't make a male amateur outfit to match the female one they did for Kayo, though.

The new bundle has 11 items, including a character, yet another mohawk (albeit contextually appropriate), outfits, textures, and architecture. Not sure I want to do $55 worth of that, though.

EDIT: And a banner just appeared for an extra 20% off for people who bought the earlier bundle. Still not sure I want to do $43 of that, either.

Man I wish they'd had released the wrestling bundle first, I would have bought that in a heartbeat, but after spending a few bucks on Kwan and some other stuff I can't swing it. Great stuff though, I'll be snagging it at some point for sure.

    Thank you

nice to see someone understands my desperation.. lol.
lmao @ the sweat, yeah, not very sell-able those days. or maybe as a bio-weapon...

i'm only targeting the figure(s), not the bundle(s), so not 98$ for me - but yeah there are 3 of them "Kwans". and i already have 2 others on my wishlist (Wufei + Chayton). AND today, Jing appeared, so one more. makes 6 guys i really wanna buy very soon... *points finger towards temple*

ah, i am NOT a speshulist in any way about Asian names. just a weeb watching megatons of korean/japanese/thai series. and i'm aware that among the Thai population, there is a broad mix of different origins. from what i noticed, while you could maybe guess in Korea from the name where the ancestors originated, besides the clan system, (not Japan, they picked another basis when they decided to go with 2 names, not 3 like China/Korea) - but i might be very wrong - the names in Thailand are all very Thai (rather similar to India than China, and 2 parts + nick).
but the features/face of a Thai person "might be" more indicating of the origin of their ancestors i think, but yeah, after centuries/decades of marriages... also, still from what i know, many/most Thai have nicknames, and might choose to be called by that depending on situation.

my impression from Tamati's name was just based on the fact that i have never heard a nick like that up to now, 3 syllabes is a bit long, usually i noticed 1 or 2. and somehow, if it was a first name not a nick, it definitely doesn't sound Thai to my ears... too short or just not the right sound...

but i really have no experience nor knowledge, just watching too many series ;)

the decision to market kwan this way is a strange one. I can't really guess why his original content was put in a second bundle and other male content put in the release bundle.

it would be like selling Vicky 8 with a whole bunch of other characters stuff then releasing the extra v8 content the next day in a second bundle.

i agree about the Mohawks. We know they are easy to make but seriously we have so many now.

Okay so the wrestling bundle isn't really downloading for me in DIM. I got the 3 DAZ O figures I bought downloaded, but not the wrestling bundle.

And weridly, wehn I go to my purchase history it is there. And when I go to the individual items to download them, they show unpurchased.

So in looking further at the new bundle, it clearly has no dim download. and yeah I put a ticket in. It does have a manual and daz central download though.

EDIT: but the manual download does not work. It is because no contents are listed in the bundle. Ugh.

Yep. And pricing seems off. The sci-fi one (trooper bundle) has less items and cost more. Yes, it does have some expensive items and included textures/colors, but i would very much prefer to pay less for not having the hd-addon and one(or two) less character but keep the sci-fi stuff.

Still, i think DAZ is testing how this goes. As such, this may not be suited for my taste and wallet (enven if it has sci-fi) but probably they will try alternative things.

What i find odd is that daz is giving a discount to those who had already purchased Kwan bundle but is not offering something similar for purchasing both now, its only been 2 days.

I really enjoy this structure BUT it makes more sense if you look at it from the Kayo POV, e.g character bundle release -> character included in 2nd larger theme bundle. The reason I like it is that if you don't like the character's pro bundle content, this format allows you to still pick up the character within a bundle sale price... and those who have already bought the character pro bundle can still get the larger theme bundle with appropriate purple banner discount(s).

I think it would have made more sense though if they'd released as Kayo 8 character bundle -> Kwan 8 character bundle -> Kayo and Kwan within Aliens vs Troopers... because then Aliens vs. Trooper is very clearly an alternative buying option or "add-on".

Me neither. I passed on Kayo at the time for that reason, so I was glad to pick her up as well on Kwan's launch.

No kidding on the Mohawks.  I often wonder if all the staff at DAZ are still dressing like it's the early 1980s.  In the meantime, there's a serious lack of short male pattern baldness hairs which would be almost as easy to make...

Mohawks are easy to make and thus we seem to get a lot of them.

I just wish we'd get a few more everday styles. I don't need more anime hair, female hair products marketed for men  or dforce hair which does little.

For the more muscular name-and-number Daz Originals characters, it's been done since Genesis 3. Only for the musclehunks, though -- Michael and Lucas and Owen don't have them, for example, but Darius 7 and 8,Ivan 7, Brute 8, Lee 7 and 8, and Dain 8 all have vein normal maps.

103 with tax. nice stuff. 7 free half bundles.  yes/no  yes/no

  • I prefer the big Alien vs Trooper bundle (and I like Wrasslin), but it might have been too much for me without the purple banner for owning Kayo 8 items. The free items were helpful, but not as helpful as a lower price.

Doing wrasslin' renders wasn't in my plans, but now I might think about it.

I own Dain and Vladamir and you're totally right -- just checked and they have the vein normals too! How did I not notice until now?! I'm such a dork! But, still, it would be great if they'd add this as a standard feature. I'm not 100% sure but I THINK I remember reading that actually even non-muscular people have veins.

A Step in the Right Direction

Thanks Daz. This themed bundle was a great move. I'm very tempted to buy it, but between my lower income, the fact you tapped me in the last sale & the fact that this is Prime Anniversary over in the "other" place, I'm going to give it a pass.

I don't really us male characters that often & I'm really not into wrestling & I was tempted.

Let's have more cool bundles like this

How about mad scientist & nurse bundle? With lab coat, lab, monsters , etc

Here is the last of the Kwan's. (Yeah I know I said that, but there was a new one today). Jing for Kwan8.

Jing is a very nicely packaged character, and includes multiple brow options, eye options, and one of the nicest organized directories I've seen. He also has some great tats. He comes with Kwan dialed in at 50 percent.

Jing looks great! (I wasn't that much into the other to add-on characters.)

His tattoos look like body-paint though, will need to to some manual fiddling to make them look like actual tattoos.

Wow, you made Jing look great, but I wouldn't have guessed he'd look like that from the promos (but your special process makes all of these folk look great).

I'm glad Daz released the Alien vs Troopers Bundle first. They released the wrestling bundle two days later. If they had reversed the order and put Kwan in the wrestling bundle, I probably would've bought the wrestling bundle, and would've returned it in order to get the sci-fi stuff I prefer.

I hope Jing isn't the last of the Kwans. He is such a strong morph that I'd like to see some more PAs use him as the basis for their own takes an East Asian manhood. They can just sell them to Daz Originals so there won't be as much risk. Of course, he will have to sell well for that to even be an option.
