well the paw for animals looks exactly like the Facebook symbol for a group![blush blush](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/embarrassed_smile.png)
which many people thought was an animal paw![devil devil](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/devil_smile.png)
IE11 (at least the later builds) does still work fine with DAZ (and Rendo), the only problem I've noticed is that the DAZ Product Library gets very slow if you only have a few products on the list after a search. There's probably a "magic number" from where it works OK, with e.g. 8 it's very slow while with 20 it's normal (fast). Looks like a bug.
@kleinefotoman
Hi kleinefotoman!
Speaking for myself, the grammar isn't so dangerous; but, in your case beware: in German, it wouldn`t also be "kleine man." For various reasons.
That said, we seem to have, indeed, tread unto an icy surface =) Let me explain the mysterious solution to our conundrum. The problem is rooted in the fact that Dutch is "Platt Deutsch", "Low German" or a form/dialect of the original German.
Let's take a look at what you wrote about German: "kleine' means "fotoman(n) is small" but 'kleiner' means "fotoman(n) is smaller than" (it is a comparitive). So yes, for German "kleiner fotomann" could indeed be correct".
Your explanation of what is going on in the German language actually doesn't match your own original Dutch meaning of the words (there is no comparative in your Dutch words), and comes to an erroneous conclusion about German due to a transliteration mistake you made.
(a) the man is small = der Mann ist klein (German) = de man is klein (Dutch).
In this case, both Dutch and German use "klein", so it seems to create no confusion for you.
(b) the cat is shorter than the man = die Katze ist kleiner als der Mann (German) = de kat is kleiner dan de man (Dutch).
Here is where your confusion and mistaken assumption comes in: you see "kleiner" in both German and Dutch and assume that I was using a comparative, but that has nothing to do with what your screen name means, nor what I was saying in German.
If I were using a comparative, I'd be forced to make that clear by not leaving out the word "than" (shorter than) = kleiner als (German) = kleiner dan (Dutch). Again, that has nothing to do with what your screen name means, nor what I was saying in German.
REVISION (left out a part of the explanation in the original post):
Here is where things begin to get more dicey:
(c) a small (short) man = ein kleiner Mann (German) = een kleine fotoman (Dutch) .... in the case of the indefinite article, but
(c) the small (short) man = der kleine Mann (German) = de kleine man (Dutch) .... in the case of the definite article .... and
(d) small (short) man = kleiner Mann (German) = kleine man (Dutch) .... in the case of no article, as your screen name has it.
As you can see, the Dutch uses "kleine" for everything, except for the comparative; so you incorrectly assumed that this must be the form I was using, despite the fact that there are actually two other -er endings in German (see also (c) and (d)). And since youre screen name is written without any article (indefinite or definite), the German equivalent is (d) above, which is what I had said.
Therefore, you saying: "In German it would actually also be "kleine fotomann"." is 100% incorrect.
*** More about the accurate use and reading of German (where Dutch comes from) .....
Regardless of the case (or "Casus", which in this case is Nominativ), adjectives in German take their endings from the noun that follows them, in this case "fotoman" as you wrote it.
In German, it's not "man", which means "one", for example, "What one can say, ... (Was man sagen kann, ...). Instead, it is "Mann", which in English means (not female, but) "man".
To be more precise, adjectives in German take their endings from the root or stem of a noun, which is at the end of the noun itself. If the noun that an adjective describes is masculine, then a masculine form ending is required on the addjective.
In this case, "foto + Mann", with "Mann" being the root. However, correctly spelled one should write "Fotomann", which has a capital "F" because countable and uncountable nouns are capitalised in German.
So, since the stem of that word, Fotomann, is "Mann," which is masculine, the corresponding definite article in the Nominativ (the, for "the" photoguy) is: der Fotomann (not "de" as in Dutch).
This becomes "der kleine Fotoman" when using the definite article, but in the case of the Indefinite form, and also when using no article, "eine kleiner Fotoman" and "kleiner Fotoman", respectively.
So, I can only encourage you to spend a little more time on your German knowledge, because you are almost half there!
*** Now, I also made an incorrect assumption in my remarks: I assumed that you were an anglo, native-English speaker, trying your best to invent a German screen name, but not quite getting it right. A somewhat understandable case of mistaken identity when you consider that (1) the Dutch are located between Great Britain and Germany (with not much physical space separating the Netherlands from either), (2) that your language originally comes from the German, and (3) that Dutch has so many English-sounding words that one might be forgiven for thinking that your screen name sounds like an anglo person trying their best to fake the German language .... or even make fun of it, who knows ... =)
Anyway, my apologies for not spotting that you might be Dutch!
Ik wens je een leuk weekend!
Eh, just my opinion, but it looks cold, unfriendly, and having the names of half of the products truncated to fit bugs me. Won't stop me from shopping here of course, but it's another example of everything in life suddenly needing to be changed as soon as you like or get used to it.
Thank you!!! This solves the issue for me. I had not thought to check if an Opera update would fix the issue. I was running 71.0.3770.198...
Just another note...
I'm visiting this site on a 1366 x768 monitor. Before, I could barely get two complete rows of products on my page, note that my task bar at the bottom is 2 high, so as to allow for two rows of windows. Even if I didn't have that, the new page layout won't give me two complete rows.
This is important for people that shop on their tablets. Sure, having part of a row of product images cut off because it won't fit on your screen might seem trivial, but whn scanning for new products, the less scrolling the better.
Also, I'm noting that the product page rows are shifting down slightly when you mouse over things, which gives you a second row on the product name text. This is generally considered bad form in web design. I get that the goal was to allow a second row to appear for the product name, squeezing the second and third row for that product, but it shouldn't affect the alignment of the row below.
I'm also not seeing Daz Original or PC+ icons on the new product pages, at least not on the pages I scanned.
Thanks Sevrin for posting that. The screenshot I had from last year didn't include the fave icons (interesting). Anyways, let's talk about this for a bit.
Note that the % Off is white on red, and is the first thing in the row. This is probably the most important thing I look for when checking sales, as I generally won't buy anything unless it's discounted significantly in this store. Since I know from shopping regularly here that 60% off happens often enough, 70%+ does happen with older items, well it's the first thing I check.
The price is in bold, with the original price crossed out and greyed out. I don't pay much attention to the greyed out price, as what I'm interested in is what it will cost if I buy it right now.
The product name is White on Black. Someone in this thread didn't like that, but I liked how it blends/links the product name with the image above. Someone posted an example where they went white on dark blue, which would be fine too, as long as it links the name with the pic.
The DO and PC+ icons were incorporated to the right of the product name. Plus, DO and PC+ is, as I mentioned now completely missing from the product listings page. This is important info for those wanting to use their PC+ coupons.
The 'New' ribbon banner was small and in the upper right corner. This was a good place for it. Where it is now obscures too much of the product image.
The 'Fave' icon, It looks too 'jaggie' now, at least on my screen.
My screenshot doesn't include the 'add to favorites' icon, which I do think is important, but it had the old Fave icons, so here it is:
Sure, the old Fave Icons were a bit more dominant, but then that's kind of the point. You immediately notice that the product is on your wishlist. The new Fave Icon is smaller, so it doesn't jump out at you.
One other note. Rather than trying to add a third row, do note all of that dead white space across the rows between the pics. In order to keep the layout a bit more tight, you could do something along these lines instead:
There are actually a couple of different approaches here, but mainly the idea here is to align the icons along the left side of the product image, putting a bit of that white space between the images to good use while still having the icons overlap the image a bit so as to make it clear what the icons are referring to. Also note that you could align multiple icons along the left side of the image as needed.
Whether you want to go with male/female symbols or just use F or M, either way I think that this approach would be a bit cleaner, and would fit a bit better on my tiny 1366 x 768 screen.
But yeah, at the very least we DO need the PC+ and DO icons back, and the new layout really hurts my eyes. The % off and price aren't as prominent, which is annoying.
That's my suggestion anyways!
I had thought, when I commented earlier, that the icons (or rather, the added information) could be useful, but I've noted since that I ignore them. Too much effort to parse them.
If the meaning of the icon is not immediately obvious then there is no point on using the icon. If I have to move the mouse to get the text description of the icon - I'll never know what the icon means, because I'm not into running the rodent around the track. If the promo image interests me I'll open the link in another tab; if not, I pass it by. I make purchase/wishlist decisions solely from the product page - including, usually, actually looking at the price - I need to know just what is in the product to see if the price charged is acceptable.
So, unfortunately this is a no go for me. Turns out this IS the update that freeze/crashes my browser which is why I had rolled back to an older version of Opera. Solution for me seems to be to switch over to Opera GX.
On the positive Opera GX is pretty cool with the glowing neon especially when "force black" is applied to pages. Just a bit of a pain to have to reset up things like extensions and settings for a store front change.
But there is a potential for a game here: "Guess the product!" All we need is a plugin to strip out the icons to play...
Who would guess that the attached synbols stand for this?
LOL, yeah that is not what I would have expected. Not sure why simple text like "G8 / Environment / Prop / Poses" wouldn't be more intuitive, but I've kinda given up trying to understand this year.
No obvious correlation between icons and linked product.
I'd love to browse the store, but I'm having the same problem at Ati. Why decide to mess around with the store layout right before another major sale, with their track record of breaking things?
Well, on the bright side at least this'll save me so much money.
Bizarrely, only on the Fast Grab page, the 'wishlisted' heart is on the left, hidden behind the [Sale] sticker - in the main store page, it's still on the right.
It's not bad; some helpful icons, all I need now is 240 items per page and maybe 480
Agreed. Superfluous for most.
Why the necessity for any of that, including text? Has anybody ever experienced confusion on count of not having icons or words telling them if they are looking at a character, a tree or a vehicle? Do we even need to be told if it`s a male or female character? In fact, these days we are being told there are no hard lines and the whole thing is fluid, non-binary, etc. If not commiting mistakes that may be offensive to others is highly prized, then why even wade into that subject with icons?
I guess it could help to show whether a product is intended for G8F or G8M. However quite often this information is also available in the product title.
(DAZ did try the non-binary route on Genesis 1 but for artists who create clothes etc. this was more pain than help.)
I guess the advantage of icons is that they are language neutral. There are people from all over the world browsing this store, and some of them may not understand English very well (or at all). Since they may not be able to read the description, or maybe not even the title, then an icon can at least tell them if this is a hair, character etc.
The icons don't bother me. Personally I don't find them helpfull.
But what would be helpfull, was if there was a filter on the same topics, so you could select what to see.
And the sales tag is annoying.
its too confusing with gey bars, you don't knowif its for the prduct above or below the gray bar, not inpress with the new look site, the text and pricing is also too small, belive this is a tactick to take you away from the pricing so you will look more at the product which then incresae sales as people will want it more, not a good move in my opinion.
I haven't like the store since they did away with the dark version, I just find it easier to see and read with a darker background.
And the Daz says most people do not read the text, they buy by the promo images.
Between a character and set probably not, but sometimes when you're only looking at the main promo pic and even product name it's not that obvious if the product is a character, hair or clothing. And given that quite a few people don't even bother to look at the product page it can actually be useful to know that from the list.
Thanks, good to know - mine is older. (I knew I should have upgrade when I had the chance.)
I dislike Edge (I have it on a tablet). Actually I use Chrome (fully updated) for most store hunting because the Browser Add-on works with it. (I also use it for financial stuff where security is paramount.) But it will neither print nor scale as helpfully as IE, which is why I hung on to that.
on my Win7 machine one of my Windows updates was actually Edge Browser being added with a warning from Microsoft not to use Internet explorer
of course they also want me to update to Win 10
I do use Win10 on another machine, my 3D render computer
it has all my Chrome extensions, autofill passwords and was signed into everything too!
that scared me a tad
Changes can be uncomfortable in general, but these changes seem reckless.
Clearly, there is too much white. It is hard to focus on the product illustrations when the white is blasting away. Plus, the yellow heart wishlist icon is too small, and It is hard to tell the difference between the "purchased" icon and the "Daz Original" icon. When you have to scrutinize every detail, it makes scanning through a large number of items very difficult.
Daz, you have been given many great - and reasonable - suggestions in this thread. I hope that you are listening.
I like the new look of the store except for this point you make. I agree that some indication of which direction this information is for would be helpful. Just a slight border along the long edge then little legs on the sides going up or down or whatever would be very helpful. To be honest this is a pet peeve of mine, especially with forms. Name? Is that for the line it's on...under it? Over it...dagnabit...
AFAIK you can still upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 and 8, for free, if that's what you mean.
No, I meant IE11 on Win7.
I don't want to go to Win10 on this machine, it's specs are wholly inadequate (it's a 10-year-old laptop with little memory and little disk space that I only use for internet and downloading DS files to a USB stick to transfer to my offline PC). I have Win10 on my tablet, which I barely dare to switch on because it eats up my (fixed monthly) download allowance doing massive Win10 updates at the least opportune moment. I'm dreading the day when my laptop finally croaks and I have to replace it.
ETA: I'll make do with Chrome browser for the store meanwhile.
