Well, this is interesting.  While the product store page does state that the Vellus hair is included with the victoria 8.1 figure, that is apparently NOT the case.  While I did put in a sales support ticket, those have been taking so long to answer recently that it just adds to my frustration.  I had held off on purchasing the V8.1 figure in large part because of the somewhat misleading advertising-which I am choosing to believe was unintentional but with the statements on the forum that DAZ3D was including it with V8.1, I decided to go ahead with the purchase.  Now, I find that even though the product store page states it is included, it is still apparently NOT included.  I have uninstalled -and made sure to delete the download package- via DIM and still no vellus hair. Hopefully someone here can advise me?

I guess that it was delayed due to Daz needing to package the item, but that's my guess, Daz needs to confirm that, anyway it's coming soon as it's located on the V8.1 product page.

Its alreadly listed on the product page.  I checked that.  Its definitely NOT in my library though.

I imagine they use a content delivery network to serve files to DIM. It will take a little while until all servers in the network have received the updated file. Try again in a few hours.

Too much compatibility lost with G8 expressions. I was using dialed-in expressions and then adjusting them in viewport.

With half of the expressions not working on 8.1 due to changes in the facial rig the new G 8.1 is a huge downgrade for me. The facial widget only is not giving me enough creativity. New eyelashes, body hair and tear are nice, but until the expressions compatibility is fixed I will not have use for any more 8.1 characters.

Also, there should be an official tutorial how to use PBR shader to get the results similar to the old G8 skins.

I am playing a bit with the new facial rig and seeing lots of possibilities.  It just takes a bit of getting used to.  I can definitely see the advantages as to creating more lifelike expressions.  I can definitely see the frustration though.  All those products we paid for in the past not working it can get painful financially -  especially now.  You will probably laugh at this but I have been sitting at my desk with a hand mirror practicing basic expressions on my own face just to see which muscles move and then working at duplicating that with the editor.

Ha! I actually videorecord myself acting out a scene and combing through and setting where each pose change is and how it looks to copy my character in my animations. Hell, I find myself if I'm doing a movement like turning around, I'll stop and redo it to feel how my body moves what and where so I can understand it and make a more real animation, so you are not alone!

Can anyone enlighten me whether the change in uv is due to benefits gained when porting to other applications? The seam at the collarbone is making me stressed, as I do like to customize skins.

The texel density difference between the face and torso was pretty drastic on G8. It made smooth transitions between the face and body difficult without losing detail. The extra zone now between the face and body adds a transitionary area that reduces that stark difference and is easier overall to get a smooth transition between without loss of detail.

well, I get a lot of crashing with Genesis 8.1 female, in anything but the default subdivision. I guess.... My ability to use this product is going to be fairly limited.  I certainly like it, but I think I may be forced to stick wtih G8.

That is actually the biggest draw-back with G8.1F. A nice move would be a way to "fit" the old expressions onto the G8.1F face. If FACS expressions can be moved to G8F (with the separate FaceControl tool), then there must be some way to do it the other way round. Hoping for a quick fix in Studio "4.16"

not that I can afford an iPhoneX so moot but I wonder if Facemojo etc work with G8.1?

I'm baffled why would you release an incompatibility causing update so late in the product cycle. I have a ton of G8 expressions that simply do nothing on 8.1. So what am I to do? Toss dozens of expressions out that I like and frequently use? Nope, I'll simply ignore G8.1 and any product released without backwards compatibility for G8. The update and benefits are too minuscule for it to worth tossing anything out let alone my favorite experssion morphs.

Exactly. I love all the expressions I have and have created myself or have combined. No way I’m giving all that up for a character that takes all that away. WHY would all future clothes, poses, hair not be backward incompatible if the ones we have already work? Just makes us not buy future products. Hopefully the PAs will realize this and make versions compatible with G8.0.

There was an update for the Genesis 8 Female Expressions today and they are now all showing up for me with G8.1...and working. As those were the only expression sets I used, that makes me happy. Now if only we had visemes with G8.1.

I like 8.1 and I think there are neat things there... but I like the huge pile of Expressions I have for G8 and I'm used to working with Genesis 3/8, which are still very good and useful. I think I'll just use plain Genesis 8 for now. Heck, I'm still using Genesis 3 a good portion of the time.

I'm more than happy to let others experiment & show us how to make nice stuff for Genesis 8.1 before I decide to do more in the 8.1 ecosystem.

I may still play around with the PBR Skin shader, though. Importing it to Genesis 3/8 might be fun.

I don't care for having to redo the entire workflow from the scratch. It's only going to take more time now. To me, the new update takes away more than it gives in return. Also, some of those new expressions in the new promo shots look quite uncanny to me.

An example - "eyes relax" dial. Dialing it only a little is useful for softening the expression without changing the expression. It doesn't even exist on 8.1. Same effect now requires lots of tweaking.

Two ways I look at this. One, it is a new character. No getting around that. For new things to work, some old things must be left behind (and this is a good thing). On the other, mainly in the case of Expressions, I'd like to see them work with 8.1 since most morphs work and a lot of the expressions do still work.

As for content, no, I'd like to see new clothes/hair/skins exclusive to 8.1. Time for something new after 3.5 years. Need to flex the tech without having to run back to the older model for everything (otherwise, much of the point of the new model gets lost). Besides, Genesis 8.1 itself is free, so if you were buying new clothes/characters for G8, you'd simply be just moving on to a figure that is, for the most part, backwards compat. with it anyway.

    elitism?

I mean it's probably no harder to make stuff compatible with both so that could be the only reason I can fathom

  • Victoria 8.1 doesn't look like a woman, she looks much too young, looks like an eco-student character. Especially since Victoria should be the most beautiful character, this is rather insignificant. The notch on the tip of the nose is exaggerated and not really common in mankind. The notch looks awful on some renders. Let's see what follows.

    Elitism..... how?

Also, I never said anything about the difficulty (or ease) of making things backwards compatible. I said I'd like to see them move on so they can focus on the new figure.

A face covering might, if it needed custom morphs for expressions.

You can see it how you want, but that's my verdict. I'd prefer they move on to the new figure only. Yes, I want to see them focus on what's new, but what they choose to do is another matter.

The seemingly easier expression features is of course tempting... On the other hand: I have so many Genesis 8.0 characters aquired, that it is just frustrating.

So, I will wait until one noble soul creates a converter smiley

But you have to apply the morphs, skin textures, etc., right? There's no way you can select something to turn a G 8.0 character into an 8.1 version of that character.

There is a converter. G8.1 converts G8 herself. No need for extras.

I'm more interested in "everyday" characters than model-types, so I started with V8.1, dialled in Topsy 8HD about 50%, applied her textures, then applied the new PBR texture. Tinkered with some of the poses/expressions, and I'm really quite pleased at the new face rigging - much more natural smiling, with less work!
