If you go under Pose Controls/Head they all should work! This is small increments of like 20 Z expressions with a few character specific morphs. So far no dials do NOTHING...I never use expressions at full strength though so I'm not sure if everything is the same.

Can you show a screenshot rather than a render, including the scene pane?

Whoa! It seems I may have complained prematurely. So far all the paid expressions I bought ARE working! And I do still have visemes. This is weird...

Really? None of the ones I've made for my own use that use any of the ones no longer available work with 8.1

I can use them fine on 8 as usual, so I don't think I did anything wrong on my end?

This is just a small portion. There are like a hundred expressions. Some PA expressions call up Daz ones, others seem to be purely PA. Some cancel each other out. I just randomly picked several.

So far every paid expression I tried does work! I haven't tried them alone to see if they are exactly as they should be since I combine them in increments anyway. But so far, they all do something! And visemes are still there and work...

    This is crazy, everything works!

@Wonderland, where did you find the visemes for G8.1?  I see them for G8F  but no way to apply to 8.1 .

    Under Pose Controls/Head

Is this what its supposed to look like, screen shot for both G8F and G8.1F  and there is no Visemes listed on 8.1,  I wonder if I didn't install something?

  • For me, virtually none of my expression dials for G8F do anything on G81F. (includes those Zeddicus dials, the 3DU dials, etc) Once in a while, a dial will slightly move the mouth around, but that's it.

I wonder what the differences are that is making it happen...

Looks like something is wrong; I do have a Visemes entry under Head 8.1, but it only shows the Anilip2 visemes.  I can't remember if I ever had native Visemes.

mmm no wonder I have been so disappointed with this update

I may need to do a complete purge and reinstall of all my Genesis 8F stuff by looks but not today

Is this new Genesis 8.1 usable with earlier versions of Daz Studio?

Being on a Mac with Catalina, I am holding at Version 4.12.1.118, which is the last stable version for me as far as I know. This means that such things as Hexagon 2.5 and Filiment renders are not useable. Is this yet another thing Daz has let Mac users fall behind on?

Sort of.  You can load 8.1, but you can't access any previous morphs because the back-end technology is only in 4.15.  If you render using the new PBR shader, it seems it'll turn out white.

You can copy the morphs folder (from: data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female\Morphs\ to: data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\), just don't overwrite anything. To keep it tidy, you can create a subfolder to dump all the G8 morphs into.

The PBR shader doesn't work at all. I've not tried the FACS system.

Mine says it’s G8.1 and has all the new attachments but the old expressions and visemes still seem to work. I wonder if it’s somehow loading G8 with the new attachments although it says G 8.1?

  • Well, I tried reinstalling the Genesis 8 Female Starter Essentials package... but that did not do anything with the G8F morphs not working on G81F.

I've tried both the normal 4.15 installation and the 4.15 beta channel version. Cannot use G8F expressions dials on G81F with either one.

Anyway, I'll just stick to G8F. I can still mess around with the PBR Shader when I want to.

Interesting. How did you install? And how do you load the character? Directly from the "Genesis 8.1 Basic Female" icon?

It’s weird that I no longer have the beta available for download in DIM. I’m definitely loading G8.1 because it loads with the weird eye texture. No idea why all my expressions are working!

Not at all sure I agree.  I loaded Hugren, selected all his surfaces, and swapped the shader to PBRSkin:

Teething problem on the Eyes I admit, but I could probably transplant a pair of Vicky 8.1's.

I have both the starter essentials installed and G8 female expressions which there was an update for in DIM today and I definitely don't have the visemems for 8.1.  I am going to try reinstalling them and see if that makes any difference.

My G.81 character is inside Male Powepose template in Smart Content. I click on it and it loads (after like forever.) it IS G8.1 because the eye default  texture is weird as others have mentioned but looks fine with any texture.

PC users as well are forced to hold back on upgrades do to the lack of support of their video card in the newer DAZ versions.

I did a video using only the free G81 update if anyone interested, next video will be the expensive G81.

It won't; I just verified it.  New scene, insert both Basics.  8 has the visemes and (in my case) Anilip2 visemes, 8.1 only has Anilip2.  I guess it is not surprising; the mouth has changed.

    reinstalling didn't make any difference..

Does anyone other than Wonderland have the Visemes available for G8.1??

where on earth are these powerpose templates in smart content?cheeky

I thought it wasn't a userfacing thing even but then I don't use smart content much

For me it’s under Genesis 8 MALE Powepose Template, then under Anatomy. It’s an attachment. I’m not even going to try it since my expressions are working thus far.

Does it make any difference if you load G8.1 from the content library instead of smart content?

In case anybody is interested, here is a side-by-side comparison of a franken-skin I put together (mostly Babina 8)(I only updated the head, so please ignore any funk in the neck on the right) -

And here is the HDRI I used in case anybody wants to replicate the lighting - https://hdrihaven.com/hdri/?h=studio_small_03

PBR shader works best with spectral rendering enabled...

Oh, and we finally have the vellus hair!

I've never liked the look of spectral rendering...it seems to give everything a green cast and pops seams into visibility. Not to mention exponentially higher rendering time.

I also have to wonder what the real difference is that makes the Uber shader somehow not PBR? Because I've always been of the understanding that it is. I get the new shader is called "PBR Shader" but isn't the Uber shader still technically a physically based rendering shader?

Yes, it is I suppose, though it's been set to be used in the default render mode, you definitely need to tweak your settings if you're to use the Spectral rendering mode as it seriously mutes the SSS effect, it also uses more accurate real-world lighting; so seeing as the majority of Daz's shaders are to be used for the general default mode, you'll need to make adjustments to your shaders, think of Spectral rendering mode as the power user settings and the default, as well... the default!wink

But yes, I agree that the default setting is much faster and is perfect for setting it and forgetting it so folks can concentrate on making quick renders without the hassle of tinkering and tweaking, while others can spend their time digging around under the hood; that's what I love so much about Daz studio as it caters to all skill levels without sacrificing the ability to go into more detail with their renders!smiley

Hey, there’s a head split deformer in there under utilities! Does that mean we can split the head morphs of characters that don’t come with that? Will Daz ever supply instructions?

so is the FACS thing only with Victoria 8 then?

no information in that video how it works as in what tool to use or if there is a window, Powerpose doesn't seem to have it just the usual dots so am assuming not just base 8.1

If you go to Expressions > any part of the face there are a bunch of new dials for 8.1. For example, eyes have options like Blink and Look Out/In.  You can also move the bones directly by expanding 8.1's head in the scene tab and opening up "upper face rig" and "lower face rig." As I understand it, the difference is mainly in how face movements are calculated.

in the video they showed onscreen controls

Oh interesting, I missed that somehow. It looks like some of the package updates are in wierd places, so maybe it's hiding (or was left out by mistake). D:

Never mind, I found it! It's under Genesis 8 Male PowerPose Templates > Anatomy > Genesis 8 Female Face Controls. It loads parented to the head and it doesn't seem to be visible in Iray viewport.

For me it is at:  People> Genesis 8 Female> Developer Kit> Genesis 8.1 Female Face Controls.  In my case as well they are parented to the head and visible in texture shaded viewport as well.

I believe the Head split deformer was already there before 8.1, but I have no idea how it works, I've never tried it out
