i know someone from Ohio but he never talks about Cleveland's baseball or football teams.  I guess he isn't a big sports fan.

It's -3 Celsius / 26 F here, wind chill making it feel like -10 C / 14 F, and there's a stormy Easterner battering at our back door right now. Snow started right before Christmas (yay) and then just froze and now keeps lying there. In two days, though, temperatures are supposed to shoot up like crazy, meaning rain and even more wind - and lots of headache ...

Grumble:  I just received a package in the post.  Yay!  Big package.  Bigger yay!  No idea what's inside.  Wheee... excitement!  Then I realize it's my auction winnings from a few weeks ago.  The item (a decoratively painted egg) that I won for bidding $7, but they charged me $50 to ship from Massachussetts to western NY,  They could have driven it to me personally in 8 hours for $50.

So I get this large package (about 12x10x9 inches) and start unwrapping, and unwrapping, and unwrapping, and unwrapping till I get to the two cardboard flowerpots surrounding yet another bundle of paper that needs to be unwrapped and unwrapped, and unwrapped (I think I've left out some layers of unwrapping in the process, but you get the idea) and finally, my beautiful painted duck or goose egg pops out looking elegant and old and worthy of appearing in my collection of elegant old things.  So, in the end I'm happy, but I did kvetch at the seller as well as the mother auction house he sold through, about the nasty tactic of over charging for postage.  It didn't result in anything except an excuse from the seller.  And from the auction house, a promise to "bring it to the attention" of the seller.  In other words, no satisfaction except the joy of kvetching.

Note:  Once sold in the auction, the seller pings the auction house and takes my money immediately without me having the opportunity to select alternate shipping or refuse payment.

Note2:  Yes, it's my fault for not noticing the shipping price which was cleverly obfuscated by location and size.  But you can be assured that I will not buy from that vendor again.

i went to one urgent care and they said three and half hour wait.  We went to a Chick-fil-A that is near another urgent care.  We got food.  Now I registered for care and it is a three hour wait.  But at least I have food to eat while waiting!

Forgot to mention that the new one is under the same group as my primary doctor.  That also means there is free Wi-Fi for my iPad.  I mean I already saved the Wi-Fi info because of it.

I don't have Covid but I do have stepfather issues.

  • So Amazon Prime is going to have a Jack Reacher series starting in February.  Relish this moment, people.  Normally I hate all of Hollywood, half of Hollywood's children, and a quarter of all the cats and dogs living there too, so to see me get excited about a teevee series is going to be a rare event indeed.

But anyway, the series seems to be MUCH more in line with the original canon of the character.  Played by Alan Ritchson, this time around Jack is big, he's really strong, he's quite intelligent but can and will crack heads, and he'll do you the courtesy of telling you exactly which of your bones he's going to break...before he breaks them!

I did enjoy the two Tom Cruise attempts at playing the character.  Not bad.  But Tom is just a wisp of a lady compared to Alan, who really seems to be much much closer to the original intent for the character.  I'm looking forward to this.  smiley

Oh, and I just a couple days ago saw "Being the Ricardos".  Oh my God, I loved Nicole Kidman in this one.  They took a lot of liberties and played fast and loose with some of the facts in this movie, but I enjoyed it quite a lot and except for the gratuitous use of the F-Bomb all throughout the film, I know my mother would have liked it too.

"I Love Lucy" was a big deal in our house, but by the time I was old enough to understand television, we were seeing reruns.  Lucy and Desi, co-partners in the DesiLu production company, took a big risk in that they used more cameras than anybody else during the 50s, and they improved their broadcasting quality in the East Coast so that people on the right side of the nation didn't have to watch the show with poor video quality.  Some of these facts were only lightly referred to in the movie, but there's more detail on Wikipedia, if you're interested.

"Are you trying to be funny?"

Nicole Kidman, very calmly, "I'm Lucille Ball.  You'll know when I'm being funny."

sometimes Dolly Hair renders slowly, sometimes it renders quickly.  It guess the 3Delight material version has a weird interaction with some skin materials.  Dolly hair renders fast with some skins but not others. I almost asked Daz customer support for a refund on the product.

Grumble:  <sigh> I've put off thinning out my file cabinets (yeah, paper files, how quaint) for three years and now I have 20 inches of paper packed into a 16 inch long drawer.sad  Two years ago I bought new manila file folders and a bunch of hanging folders to help organize and stabilize them but didn't use them.  So now, with a couple years left to themselves, they've managed to wiggle their way under various boxes and other more recently accessed stuff somewhere near my legs but getting down to look around my legs is not as easy as it used to be.blush

My 2021 new years resolution was to organize my file cabinets this year.  If I'm lucky I might get it done before New Year 2022.frown  I probably don't need movie ticket stubs and 20 year old symphony programs, and it's about time that I discarded another 7 years of financial records.  And anybody who carefully keeps their medical records and health insurance records knows that you end up with a half a tree converted to paper by the end of the year.angry  And why the hell I keep 20 year old Christmas cards is beyond me.indecision

Yep, paper tends to replicate almost as fast as rabits or feral hogs.  On the danger scale, the hogs are definitely the biggest danger, though I'm not sure which is more dangerous between rabbits and paper.

Two years ago I bought new manila file folders and a bunch of hanging folders to help organize and stabilize them but didn't use them.  So now, with a couple years left to themselves, they've managed to wiggle their way under various boxes and other more recently accessed stuff somewhere near my legs but getting down to look around my legs is not as easy as it used to be.blush

I got you on that.  I have 2 pairs of knee pads that I keep around the house for anything that might require me to kneel down for more than...oh, about 7 seconds!  Go for the nice gel-filled ones with a quick-release strap system; they're the most comfortable and they even make it possible for me to scrub the floor or retrieve that grape or tomato that rolled under the oven!

My 2021 new years resolution was to organize my file cabinets this year.  If I'm lucky I might get it done before New Year 2022.frown

Just remember, everybody has to start WHERE THEY START.  No shame.  Just start.  Oh, and take one brick out of your backpack.

I probably don't need movie ticket stubs and 20 year old symphony programs, and it's about time that I discarded another 7 years of financial records.

If something has a sentimental value, that's actually okay!  One of the best books I've read on decluttering makes the point that saving things that we cherish is OKAY!  Just decide FIRST how much space you're willing to set aside for keeping things you cherish.  Is it 1 box?  Is it 2 boxes and half of a shelf in the living room?  Make THAT decision first, and stick to it.  Oh, and take another brick out of your backpack.

Pro Tip:  For concert tickets, theatre or concert programs (or wedding/award ceremonies, etc), just take a picture of the things you're thinking of getting rid of, and it might be easier for you to let that thing go.  And remove another brick!  wink

And anybody who carefully keeps their medical records and health insurance records knows that you end up with a half a tree converted to paper by the end of the year.angry  And why the hell I keep 20 year old Christmas cards is beyond me.indecision

Consider taking pictures of old medical and health insurance records.  There are even a couple of "fax" or "receipt" type smartphone apps that can help you do this quickly, and I think some of them even include an OCR function so that you end up with a searchable database rather than a collection of unsearchable jpeg files.  Also, if you're into recipes for cooking like I am, there are similar apps that help you manage those too.  Some of them let you use your camera to take a pic of a magazine article, or import a recipe from a website, and they also have OCR.  Remove 2 more bricks from your backpack.

Christmas cards, birthday cards, get well cards, "we'll miss you" cards, those are all nice, but I actually started shredding mine back in my 20s when I was still an apartment dweller.  For a young guy just starting out in my career, I realized that I could have filled up a standard printer-paper sized box just with greeting cards that I had received!  So I got militant with myself on that and today I'll keep cards for up to a year or so.  But eventually everything goes to the shredder.

If you shred a card, that does not cancel out your appreciation for somebody's genuine sentiments of love, respect, or best wishes for you.  So set yourself a storage limit (for example, "this big shoe box for up to 1 year"), and take another brick out of your backpack.

Old paper files, an out-of-control collection of teapots, or a garage that you can't even park a car inside of; it doesn't matter what flavor your clutter is, it all just adds bricks to your backpack, and that does nothing but make you tired, worn out, and even demoralized a bit.

One of the first decluttering books I read (probably 20 years ago) was about a guitar player who had been collecting vintage cars and appliances such as refrigerators and freezers.  You can't store all that in your house, so all around the outside of his home, this stuff was just collecting.  I don't remember his name, but he was at least fairly famous.  Anyhow, he says that he just realized one day that he won't live forever.  And that filled him with great sadness and dread, because the one question he couldn't answer was, "When I die, who's going to have to go through all of my crap, and just how much are they going to hate me for putting this on them?"

Anyway, I wish you luck.  And don't hesitate to pull up You-Tube if you need organizational tips or inspiration.  I never thought Marie Kondo could help me, but now I fold my t-shirts the Marie Kondo way.  It's the only thing I do from her, but it works for me.  And allowed me to remove another brick from my own backpack!

    Have we completed the circle?

In the 80's home computers were marketed for "Saving mom's recipes", which of course was quickly adopted by the males in the family as an excuse for getting one wink

Ps. Mom still doesn't know how to use a computer...

Apps that organize cooking recipies exist?  I did not know that.  My mom just writes the recipies down on a paper notepad.

  • Speaking of mom not knowing how to use a computer...   I've found myself in the position of trying to help a friend who's husband died last summer.  She's wonderful at gardening and landscaping and knitting and such stuff but her husband handled the computers and insurances and bank accounts.  Now I'm the goto guy for that stuff.  Yeah, I can handle my own life, but you really don't want me handling your life.   My suggestion is that she find a professional for handling the important stuff.  Meanwhile I'm trying to teach her enough to use Google on a computer (She has a Mac,  I hate Macs because I've never worked with them enough to like them) and how to make and receive a call on a smart phone (that we recently took 3 weeks to transfer from her husband's name to hers.)  Bureaucracy... painful.frown

We did buy mom a tablet a few years ago, thinking that it would be easier to learn, but... I finally understand the "OverTeacher" (translated from finnish) at college, when we were given the choise of additional courses and some 80% of the class wanted combustion engines, which we didn't get and the reason was that the "OverTeacher" knew too much about them to teach us...

Complaint: Went into NYC to meet some friends...

Actually it was okay... paid lots and lots of money to park... traffic is still super annoying.

They are putting up all the stages and lighting rigs for the New Year's celebration coverage...

Also... there must be a big rift in the multiverse/spiderverse... there were like ten Spider-men milling around waiting for presumably some supervillain to show up... I have no idea what all the smelly Elmos were waiting around for, unless they were waiting to fight the Spider-men... It's hard to tell exactly what's going on there sometimes.

...maybe there was a rift in the space time continuum that opened a portal to parallel worlds in the Multiverse.  That was a common accordance in the Marvel universe for a while.  Not sure about where the villains are but a major disturbance in the Marvel space time fabric could have resulted in a glitch that sent them some where or some-when else.

A Musing: (not "amusing")  Why would a home computer not involved in video production 3D rendering or obscessive gaming, need 6 cores, 12 threads, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD?  What happened to the affordable 3 or 4 hundred dollar laptop or desktop.  Surely one could be produced for basic home needs for a reasonable price for those who need it.  Heck, people spend $500+ for a freakin' phone which is super high tech.  A $300 computer is just a metal box with a few parts bolted in.  Bing-batta-boom, a 'puter.  Yeah, we might have to use near ancient CPUs and slow RAM but there must be a market for $300 computers.  I can make a $100 computer from scrap parts but nobody wants a $100 computer it seems too cheap.  Perhaps if I just inflated the price a few hundred?devil

I sorta shaved my head - well, there's a first time for everything - I guess.

I've gone all over the internet looking for Mistara. Can't find anything newer than her last visit here. I am fearing the worst, and I'm pretty sure the name on her books (Misty Lara Prendville) is a nom de plume. So somewhere in New York... (sad heart).

Don't make it feel it has to make a special effort.
