this weather is doing a # on my bones - ache eck - 'plaint

huddled around a latte for warmth

today's the day to come to terms with rendering and ppi.

i understand inches and dpi to find the pixel dimensions.

but starting with the dimensions and then setting ppi? i just don't get it.

...ugh here today as well. Was supposed to be sunny and in the upper 60s, instead turned out to be cloudy rainy and windy.

A train trip from New York Penn station to Orlando, FL will take 23 hours on the Silver Star line.

...yeah, but not as nerve wracking as flying - having some TSA flunkies prodding you where only your doctor is allowedto, getting a full body x-ray, paying a fee for your luggage, dealing with weather related (or other) delays, and being crammed in a tiny space referred to as an airline coach cabin seat for hours with some stranger effectively sitting in your lap when he or she relines their seat.

I'd go for the Silver Meteor - 21 hrs to Orlando. 3:15 PM from Penn Station arriving at 12:44 PM the next day in Orlando.

Now you have me thinking about a big train trip. Looking at Portland - New York - New Orleans - LA and back to Portland. If I wait until next year I can get the seniors discount which would save quite a bit. Of course at my age would have to book a sleeper car on all overnight trains (meals and other amenities are include in the price).

Yeah, I hate flying. Well, no. Not true. I love flying, I just hate the airport experience. So every time I think it's time for a Florida fix I think about train or even bus until I look at the prices. :bug: So, I end up biting the bullet and driving. I can drive it with only one motel stop. But no matter how I figure it, a trip that includes an Orlando attraction for a day or two costs me about $1000 or more in total if I really want to enjoy myself and stay at a decent hotel and eat in nice places at least a couple times. Flying involves airport experiences. And anything but driving involves renting cars and parking for my own car at the departure airport or terminal.

There are some, and there are other places to sit but mostly they want you to sit in a restaurant. I think the put most of the benches out in the sun just for that reason.

For $50 if you get to the park really early in the day you can rent an electric personal vehicle. I've swallowed my pride and used that service. Makes the park soooo much more less painful. That way you can be sitting most of the day. I carry my cane with me and that helps while I'm standing in line. And also comes in handy for spearing annoying children. A cane can also come in handy for evicting less aggressive seniors from the shaded occupied bench seats if you're not using an electric personal vehicle.

...for me it isn't just the airport, but the inflight experience as well these days.

Inflight service? What inflight service? here in the States, even first class is nowhere near what it used to be. You are lucky to get a bag of peanuts or a granola bar these days. You also better be carrying plastic if you want to buy a drink on board as they no longer take cash in payment.

Airline coach seating today should be banned as a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Being tall, having both bad arthritis and poor circulation makes every flight an excruciating experience. I'd rather spend two days in comfort on a train than four to five hours of hell wedged into a space more fit for an 8 year old than a full sized adult.

Then there's the today of moving to these called "regional jets", and using them on longer flights in excess of 3 to even 4 hrs. I'd rather fly on an old piston engined Convair Metropolitan (see below) as they were more comfortable than these "toy jetliners" used today. Crikey, at least back then you could stand up instead of having to walk hunched over to get on and off.

True, the seats have shrunk in all dimensions as has the space they occupy. I also have to admit that I'm about twice as wide as I was 10 years ago. Well, no. Not true. My shoulders used to be that wide but all that extra width has moved down to the part of me that's closest to the cushion. Last time I flew (about 4 years ago) I felt like five pounds of Crisco in a three pound can.

But I still get a child's thrill out of watching the ground out the window and always reserve a window seat.

My theory is, that they keep shrinking the seats so that at some point they can redesign the seats so you can merge two of them properly to make one larger seat and they get to charge normal sized people for two seats. Either that or they're only going to be flying people from Thailand around and give up on the western giants.

    ..

What they are doing is making the seats out of thinner materials (eg. flimsier) so they can reduce the seat pitch (distance between the rows) even more. The padding is also thinner so if you are just a bit on the heavy side, you can actually feel the seat frame underneath.

I always felt it was a dubious claim that an airliner seat cushion could ever really serve as a "certified flotation device" (save maybe for a five or six year old who's diet didn't primarily consist of eating at McDonald's). Nowadays there is so little foam padding that they wouldn't even prevent a cat from drowning.

My theory is they will eventually just take out all the seats and stack the passengers in like cordwood.

....or maybe this might become the new "coach" class.

The answer to this is easy. Everybody just has to pay triple the typical tourist fare and we won't have to leave our legs at home. Planes used to be an air limousine, now they're the new bus. I will draw the line though if I walk in and see livestock, and kebab sizzling on a hibachi.

Try something different then like making silhouettes and when you are happy with those add a point light in front of a face and adjust a fall off parameter for a while, see how that works :)

Canceled my Digital Tutors subscription last night. Was tempted to take up the 20% Off coupon offer they had, but honestly I haven't been doing much in the way of 3D'ing these months or even launched the Offline Browser in like, well... Months. So it was pretty much $47 a month going towards nothing.

I do plan on renewing it later, but right now I just haven't been using it enough to justify the monthly cost.

...my old hometown of Milwaukee is the same. Too close to Chicago (even though they have a much nicer terminals and literally no delays) and outside of "Cattle Class" Airlines (Southwest) they are just another "spoke" on other airlines' hubs. Most of the flights that operate there (save for Southwest) are also on those cramped commuter jets I mentioned about as well.

The airport there used to see the "big jets" land there back in the day, like 707's, DC-8s, 720s, 727s as well as even DC10s & 747s on a regular basis. Now the only "big planes" that show up are for FedEx and UPS. an occasional charter, or when severe weather shuts down O'hare and flights have to be diverted.to Milwaukee to wait it out.

A few years ago the double deck Airbus 380 landed there before heading to the big EAA airshow in Oshkosh. Was a major event. Also had the Russian Antonov 225 (the biggest plane in the world with six engines- see below) land there to pick up some oversized cargo. Once again it was a big event for the city and local "planespotters" even though it was the middle of winter.

Here in Portland we will be getting nonstop service to Germany this summer on Condor and British Airways is interested in starting service here as well. The only overseas flights we currently have are to Amsterdam and Tokyo (both on Delta )

...my old hometown of Milwaukee is the same.

The only overseas flights we currently have are to Amsterdam and Tokyo (both on Delta )

wow big aircraft, lots of wheels for the cargo bay would make it a heavy lifter :)

Sounds steep for a web service, can't believe how expensive traing is in places. But the rates for VFx and mograph ppl are going through the floor is just another thing that don't make sense
