That's what Paris looks like these days:

    Place de la Concorde:

    Champs Elysées:

    Avenue de l'Opéra:

Even in August, where Paris is rather empty (compared to the rest of the year), there are cars and people everywhere. It's pretty weird to see it like that.

I don't think LA has ever looked like this. Ever. There were probably more people on the streets before they had paved roads! I heard helicopters earlier. Nothing is open past 9pm now so there's no reason for anyone to be on the street and I'm wondering if people can get tickets for just taking a walk now. This is so surreal!

This is a freeway that is usually bumper to bumper traffic pretty much any time of day and Hollywood Boulevard where all the tourists go (and close to where I live, but I always try to avoid the area because it's usually so crowded.)

Wonderland, the freeways were like this during the 1984 Olympics in LA. I had guests who wanted to go to Disneyland, and I dreaded driving from the Mojave into LA, but I found empty freeways and a fast drive. I hadn't seen anything like that since the early 1960s before we moved.

Last night our local news ran a story of church groups who are teaming folks up in pairs to run shopping/pharmacy errands for older/physically handicapped folks in NE Denver. While they can't go to church, it is their way to serve their faith and community. (NE Denver has some of the poorest neighborhoods and biggest food deserts in Denver.)

I am lucky that I am in an older apartment that has four apartments that open onto a wide breezeway, with stairs at each end, three stories, and this goes on through the buildings, with different sizes of apartments. I rarely see anyone out. Yet yesterday afternoon, as I walked the dog people were biking, walking, jogging and the snow that had been 7 inches, was almost gone, or turned into a slushy mess. Even some of the boulders of ice. But I am going to be really careful when walking from now on in the morning. I can barely move this morning after my fall yesterday.

My favorite pizza place is still open! Pie Society. You can only go into the store long enough to pay and they bring the boxed pizzas out to you. They were always takeout. And very busy now. Of course the marijuana and liquour stores were doing roaring business still.

There's a skit in the British "Yes, Minister" (or maybe it was the "Yes, Prime Minister") TV series where Humphrey Applebee is arguing with the Prime Minister against a cigarette smoking ban because too many people would survive to old age, increasing the old age benefts costs.  His classic line was something like "People should continue to die at the current rate".frown

How do you keep your bread from getting moldy?  Every time I bake bread, it barely lasts 3 or 4 days before it's got green spots all over it.  I would consider it a huge win if I could get my baked bread to last 7 days outside of the fridge.

A low pH (e.g. using sourdough instead of yeast) will make bread more resistant to mold and rope .   Dense bread tend to be more resistant to mold than fluffy bread.

Keep in a cool, dry and dark place.  Humidity, heat and light facilitates growth of mold.

Let it cool completely after baking before putting it in a bag, and keep tightly sealed (as little air as possible in the bag).

You could also just use preservatives of course, but I guess that's obvious.

I would think going out for a drive would be a good way to combat cabin fever from being isolated. I see no issues as long as you stay in your car it be a great time to take a drive around sight seeing with less traffic on the roads.

we for a ride on the ATV up in the mountains yesterday afternoon it was fun distractions

Please no, I'd sooner have zombies, although it is a close run thing over which of the film genres are more boring. At least there are a couple of decent zombie flicks

I had 'Whole Earth Cookbooks' and was able to eat at their Santa Barbara restuarant before it closed and became a bowling alley. Great food. Some of my favorite recipes.

Implying that it is beneficial several ways, such as it is preventing huge amounts of other deaths as well as slow down spreading of coronavirus.

LOL, the other day at WalMart literally all TP & paper towels where completely sold out and the only thing that was on the shelf was the 1 thing that should of been sold out instead: those pocket sized packages of facial tissues (which are a much more affordable and cleaner approach than facemask incubators anyway since nobody I know can obtain a supply of facemasks they can throw away every hour on the hour like what is meant to be done with them).

They used to make us carry a pack of those pocket sized facial tissues in the military. It gets after a while you just get used to carrying them in your pocket and you seem unprepared when you don't have them.

Apparently it is fine to threaten to throw everything thing out if one thing is out of place.

Anybody still got a copy of "The Last Whole Earth Catalog"?

No as I do not know what it is.

A big paperback catalog, about an inch thick and dimensions about the same as a typical coffeetable book.  As it says on the cover, "Access to Tools"  It's a catalog for living off the grid, or at least having the tools for self survival.  Very popular for some of the commune style hippies of the '60s and '70s.  Much of its information can now be found on the Internet, but there was no Internet in the '60s.  And when the information is really needed, there won't be any Internet again.  Better to have the book, which was also full of useful information about growing, cooking, hunting, building, surviving with your wits.  Authentic copies of the original "Whole Earth Catalog" and the "Last Whole Earth Catalog" can be found on the Internet for $$$, but there are a few such types of publication now, but the originals are classic.

  • The reduction in air traffic will be reducing the output of greenhouse gases. However, the reduction in con-trails will be considerably increasing the amount of sunlight reaching the ground and increasing the temperature.

During the 9/11 airspace closure scientists discovered it was worth up to 2C temp reduction in some places. The more prolonged period this time may enable a better range to be put on those numbers. And the results may be pretty uncomfortable if the last set of results are confirmed. We may find we need aircraft to keep the temp down while still getting to zero net carbon. Don't know how it could be done without needed food being used to create fuel for needed aircraft. It would have been better not to start from here.

My guess is your not eating iyour bread fast enough. So if you make more than you can eat you should wrap it good with plastic wrap and freeze it. or refrigerate it .  But its also pretty well know that you add 2 table spoons of Honey to your bread recipes to extend homemade bread freshness and keep it from molding ..... But don't take my word for it .Look it up, you seem to not believe anything else i wrote wink

Back in the days of Salem witch trials a mold called Ergot grew on rye bread that caused psychedelic effects for the residents and the cows and is a derivative of LSD. Other mold is a precursor to penicillin. Bread creates interesting molds!

Still no delivery windows available anywhere and Amazon keeps pulling everything organic out of my cart anyway because it's all sold out. Going to venture out Tuesday morning to Trader Joe's because that's usually the least crowded time, but I haven't gone food shopping since March 8, so have no idea what it's like now. I'm craving my usual organic baby carrots with spicy hummus dip, organic broccoli with spicy guacamole, organic fresh spinach, and Fuji apples! I'm hoarding my frozen mango, organic frozen berries and a few bananas I have in the freezer for smoothies. I usually eat really healthy anyway but now I'm ONLY eating foods with high nutritional content. I'm looking at food as preventative medicine! BTW, fresh RAW garlic has allicin which can help prevent bacterial infections and viruses and shorten their duration. Good thing I'm isolating now because I probably stink of garlic!

Social distancing is not a problem for me.  I have bagpipes and an inflatable T-Rex costume, and I am not afraid to use them!

Um...my sons request that I NOT test-fire the bagpipes...no appreciation for classical music.
