I have a silly question... Are we supposed to be simulating the dForce hair?  Nothing seems to happen when I click 'simulate' on my Zeus.

I could be wrong. But I don't really see cat fur to be dependant on gravity.

Good point... but it does say dForce hair... so I was wondering if it needed to be simulated.  hummmmmmmmmmm

ok.. I had more time to play now that I'm awake... lol.

Here is the long hair simulated and not simulated... Seems like the simulated has lots of stray hairs pointing in all directions.  I don't use dForce near as much as I should so I don't understand all the commands... so I'm probably doing something wrong.  lol

This is simulated... notice the spiky hair...

    This is NOT simulated...

If you unhappy with the simulation you can play with simulation settings of the fur on surface tab.

Sorry.. you typed faster than I could upload my samples... lol  (see above)... I'm kinda thinking I may just live without simulating... for now.  I'm not that familiar with the dforce commands and it will take me some time to experiment.

I like frosty view of Zeus gray fur on your images. Sometimes dForce hair can give strange results like spikes or something. I mostly try to avoid some parameters so that the simulation doesn't go wild.
Here I increased the default Zeus fur length up to 200% and ran simulation.

Ooo.. that looks interesting... I have a feeling that simulation has a lot to do with the pose also.... My length is set to 400 with clumps of 80.  I will have to play more... I guess the bottom line is we don't HAVE to simulate... Zeus looks rather great as is ;)  I will play more ... Thanks... I'm glad you like my gray foofy Zeus!

Gives the head much better proportions.

Not sure if this comment is directed at me... but I did shrink Zeus' head by 50%  ;)

Clumpiness is exactly what I try to avoid, or add it very accurately. Increasing length from some point begins to produce spikes. In my recent render I decreased stiffness half size.

Oh WOW... Didn't realize Sphynx don't have whiskers... I had to look it up.  No wonder they look strange... Well done Gogger  (thumbzzzzzzz up!)

Got'cha... I've not played with all the hair settings yet.  Didn't see the stiffness slider... I'll play some more.  I'm kinda liking the clumpiness... My Gray Zeus looks like many of the strays that we get into the Animal Shelter.  The girls end up cutting out the clumps because the cats are not used to being combed or brushed.  They sure look funny shaved!  lol

My kitties look better with the fur simulated, especially the tails.

Usually I don't simulate at all. Or just hit "simulate".

    Here we are without simulation.

It's true the fur doesn't move much (tho it does move some), but the whiskers move quite a bit ;). I have a decent video card, so it doesn't take long for mine to simulate at all, but if you don't have a fast card, leaving as is is perfectly fine :)

Thanks everyone... My scruffy Zeus still has my heart.  He reminds me sooo much of the stray cats we get in at the shelter.

@Nath  ... I'm resisting a little longer for the latest addition.  ;)  mew.

I thought I could hold out and not encourage the 20% thing - alas. On the other hand, I've rendered the new cats more already than anything else I bought in the last month...

Just looking up the Pallas cat in the Wiki and I found lots of links to even stranger cats!  What an interesting world we live in.  I've been to zoos and have never seen such animals.  lol.  I've lived such a sheltered life!  lol
