I get that the economy is making a lot of the discounts that we've grown to expect either lessen or go away. I'll be a bit more careful before i pull the trigger on anything, but if something looks like something that I'd use (or makes a major*clang* on the "too cool" gong) I'll usually still purchase something..
But to schedule a major sales event without also offering a gift card sale (of any degree) beforehand? That is not the act of a company that actually wants to sell people things.
I find I'm not sure that I'm altogether convinced that the current owners really do. Or not to a general hobbyist market, anyway. Indeed, the impression I'm getting is that they feel they are doiing us a favor by offering us anything.
They've clearly spent the last several years openly courting various other markets, but I'm not sure that those other markets are listening.
I suspect that if any of them were, the situation in the store would probably be even worse.
A really nice thing for once, Hypertaf put their lovely Hacienda kitchen in the grab bag (https://www.daz3d.com/hacienda-kitchen). I've been wanting to get it for ages, it's so beautiful and choc-full of props. That was a sweet surprise this morning. Thank you, @Hypertaf!![heart heart](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/heart.png)
Thank your for pointing that out @tsroemi. Would have missed it otherwise. So the Hacienda kitchen is my second purchase/product I bought this March Madness. This new policy is not only saving me money but also time I guess. In the past I did check the store each day on turnover (so in the morning in Europe). Checked out the new products. Did some cart jenga. Explored potential stacking benefits and so on. Was a mix of FOMO and fun. Now it's more like shall I really take a look? Any new stuff worth to wishlist? Any grab bag really worth a purchase? FOMO is gone. So is most of the fun unfortunately.
You're welcome! And thank you for the nice words, I'm glad you like it and find it useful.![heart heart](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/heart.png)
A second thank you for pointing this out - I would have missed this wonderful looking set otherwise.
As for the March Madness, this has to be the most disappointing one that I've seen in all of my time shopping at Daz. Unfortunately, it seems to be part of a slow decline here for me. I let my PC+ lapse in November because I was hardly buying anything - I have spent £30 since then here at Daz. For me personally, the move over the past 18 months has been to less realistic and more toon-like figures in the Daz original genesis core figures. Coupled with the multiple bundles for each figure instead of the old-style pro bundles and the change from 30% off to 20% off most new releases, I find it hard to want to spend anything here.
If others can get bargains and are happy with them then that's great. For me, I feel I have reached the point where I'll just use the content that I have accumulated until there is something that really wows me (I'm am going to buy the Hacienda Kitchen though!).
Oh no I missed some Still Mad items ... Now I really wish there will be a "Catch-up Sales". Normally I wouldn't be worried, since there were almost always catch-up sales at mid-month and at the end. But with the changes on the store lately I wouldn't be so sure.
...I have one and not seeing any 1$ items mostly 2.50$ - 5$
...when they have a vault sale I check to see if there's any Aiko 3 stuff I don't have.
We were talking of the main page (homepage), items (pc+ items) sorted by price low high. Maybe it is because you already own them? Anyway, today, items for sometimes even less then a dollar have changed, and are imo not so interesting, but i am sure in the upcoming days, some of them will resurface.
I think you raise some very good points here. The fact is that by raising prices very significantly, they've forced me to take a good look at what I actually need, and the answer is, not much. As a consequence, I'm not buying much, and I now wonder if that will change even if the prices go down again?
I feel it's sad they chose to spoil one of the big events, but never mind. Not spending money on things I don't need can't be a bad thing. If Daz believes this is the best way to make money, that's what they should do. I feel they might regret it, but what would I know?
Yesterday I actually forgot to check out with my $4,99 item, that’s how enthusiastic I was about it. Today I would have purchased 18 items at the PCFAD $1.99 sales point, but today again, I probably won’t purchase anything, especially since I don’t have store credit and have to go through PayPal for each small payment. I’d rather just skip it. I don’t know why they didn’t do a gift card sale this year. They would have gotten a good chunk of money from people upfront and people tend to use up store credit much quicker than having to pay with CC or PayPal each time.
I don’t know if revenue is better or worse for DAZ this year but I can’t believe the number of sales are as good as last year. I know that we, the forumites, are supposed to be a minority of their customers but I think we must buy the most over the years. And even if they’re catering to large studios that have money, they are not going to waste time doing “Buy this to get this percentage off that,” and discounts are so minor it would be a blip to their budgets so no real reason to buy now vs any other time. And I can’t imagine that newbies wouldn’t check the forums when sales are so convoluted and they are learning the software.
I’m really trying to figure out the logic behind marketing this year. I used to think their marketing team was brilliant, they were able to manipulate me to spend way more than planned with their ingenious schemes lol, and although I spent a lot of money, I knew I was getting a good deal. But now I’m wondering if they have a whole other marketing team that doesn’t understand its customers. There’s literally no incentive to buy now vs any other time.
This is an awesome set! I would have missed this as well, glad it was pointed out by tsroemi too. Definitely something unique that I don't have yet, I'll be picking it up today for sure!
I'm sure there's zero possibility of DAZ coming out and saying "well, see, the thing is, here's our marketing strategy for 2022, y'all." Totally understandable. But oh! To be a fly on the wall at one of those marketing meetings! To view the Powerpoint slide that demonstrated that lowering the percentage from 30% to 20% would have no impact on revenue! To listen in as someone scribbled "MM 22- $4.99 instead of $1.99?" on the office whiteboard!
Good spot! Thanks!
Now, I would totally buy that one. But I already have it.![cheeky cheeky](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/tongue_smile.png)
For the record, both of my parents were professionals in music and arts. My Dad was considered a genius as a concert pianist. Made the cut for Juilliard but the war happened. Family crises, my dad's major stroke, etc, ate at most of our family's income and emotional well-being for at least half of our lives as a family.
So I understand your perspective from both an economic and professional angle.
I speak from a hobbyist angle, and I assume most here are hobbyists. Daz3D seems to be set up for hobbyists, doesn't it, more than for professionals?
So who are you talking to? You quoted me, but your arguments have nothing to do with my comments. I feel it's silly for a person to feel he's being treated unfairly by higher prices here when it's happening everywhere. Though I'm NOT a devout capitalist, that is the way the system works, correct?
I specifically described my concern for hobbyists, in that the cost of rendering has gone up obcenely while there is no effort to provide an alternative rendering capability that is high-quality and less-expensive, such as what Filament COULD be if they updated it.
So please, don't create a false battle between artists and professionals. The true issue is what could make DS more useful and economical for all of us. This, I repeat again, is what would help boost sales in spite of the prices, because our efforts at our hobby or profession would become that much more successful...
Though it would probably by more lucrative for you professionals than the rest of us, no?
Thank you, that's the way I feel. Your comment got me thinking, though. It's strange that I'm basically a left-leaning capitalism-doubter, yet I seem to be one of the very few who accepts the prices of things in this degrading economy...
I don't like profiteering, but that's not what's happening here!
...for artists like myself who are on a fixed or meagre income (and there are a number of us here), the increases make it frustrating particularly when we see something we've been waiting for. For example I love AM's Lynx given the locations in my stories but it requires the more expensive Lion as a base which brings the total price to around 73$. Just not doable.
Having to purchase full bundles instead of a single item to unlock specials and added discounts pretty much does nothing for those in our straits. Other little things I've noticed have included the move to separate out features that were included with the base product (like textures) into add ons and making a character morph that requires buying a specific figure base rather than just the generic "Gx",
It's difficult enough to keep up with ever increasing costs caused by changes in hardware and software demands, I'm still working on a system I built ten years ago that has seem some upgrades but is at it's limit and still uses legacy components (the BIOS won't support the 3060 I was able to get). The upgrade needed to continue on is around 950$ (including Windows 11 Pro).
I feel your pain on that one. Technology is a treadmill, but the current PC market is awful. I have my funds in order and I've been pricing available components to build a new system. Mostly, it's more than I want to spend and gouging on the GC prices makes it more painful.
I agree with this. I am not a hobbyist, as my entire business uses 3D products (I am a book cover designer, commercial stock provider, and I also use Daz renders in my personal art). I feel as though the high prices and very low discounts are a slap in the face to people who do buy a lot and who invest in new products - I feel as though we are not valued customers anymore. March Madness was both a reward for supporting Daz throughout the year and also a fun time to look forward to, a time to get a lot of the things on our wishlists that couldn't justify full price, but were worth snapping up on a big discount. This is so disappointing.
I really don't understand the business decisions that have been made recently - jumping on the NFT wagon I understand (although I disapprove of it strongly) as companies just see it as money with no effort. But the logic behind these weird bundles where you have to buy more and more of in hopes of getting a discount on something that you actually want? The weird Zodiac things? A membership where you buy things sight unseen that you may not want, like or need? I guess I just feel as though the old customers are being pushed out as though all of the money that we have spent in the past no longer matters as there is a new business model that they are pursuing - partnerships with Metahuman-type businesses, perhaps? I don't know. I do hope there's a reason for it.
Rant over. I've just been re-evaluating my entire business in recent months and it makes me cranky, as I like what I do. :D
I only just make it on to the hobbyist list, but I have been a bit disappointed by the way this has gone. I have bought a lot of stuff, and I've decided to re-evaluate that. I do wonder if the impact on heavy buyers has been evaluated. So many of the offers are limited because of previous purchases. Overall, though, this has forced me to look at what I do; so I am going to fight with Blender again. I'm sorry not to be able to support those PAs whose work has at times made me laugh at the skill and delight expressed. But this was a time for impulse buys, and too much conspires against that impulse now.
I am still wishlisting. So, like any recovering addict, I could slip back into old ways.
I've been on the fence since around January of this year, when this 'new normal' r.e. sales strategy kicked in.
There was a blip where there was a better than usual gift card discount situation, so I recharged my store credit. The fact is, though, I've used very little of my store credit since then. Mainly just trying to squeeze the life out of the Daz+ monthly coupons.
As for March Sadness, yeah it's pretty sad. This thing seems like a slap in the face of us customers that have been around for a few years. Sure, there is no 'obligation' r.e. which discounts we are supposedly owed, but after you get used to certain things, like what I consider the 'normal' 30% off newly released items as an introductory discount, and the fact that this time around there's only one key item every day. I seem to remember multiple key items each dayfor MM last year, which helped meet the associated criteria.
And yeah, in past March Madness sales, there were generally a bunch of items below the $1 to $2 mark. This year, nothing jumping out at me, at least not on the sales pages. Sure, it was older stuff, but I use older stuff sometimes. This time around, we don't even have the often used 'extra 10%-40% discount depending on how old the item is generation wise' thing.
It's not like there isn't stuff I wouldn't mind buying, my wishlist continues to grow, just not at these prices. I get that inflation is a thing, but for older items at least, trying to milk even more money out of those seems like a counterproductive strategy.
This whole new sales strategy seems to be counterproductive, but of course we aren't privy to the sales numbers every day/week/month. Maybe there are enough new people to pick up the slack for us 'old timers' that don't seem to be as valuable to the Daz sales stragegy. As others have noted, I have a lot of stuff already, but I was still buying new stuff regularly. Until this year that is. Now, I'm just sitting in the cheap seats waiting for a change that may or may not ever come.
I haven't been tracking comments from PAs about how their sales numbers are doing these days, in general terms (still about the same, down by about half, etc.), that'd be about the only insight us 'longtime customers' (longtime meaning we've been shopping here for a few years) might get.
I just wish that us 'longtime customers' were valued more around here than we seem to be ATM. It was the killer deals/sales on items in the past that excited me about shopping here before, and I don't regret 95% of the stuff I've bought. Some impulse buys I may never use, hence the 'only 95%' figure, but the price was good enough before that I don't regret buying these.
I don't even regret that I bought Hexagon (on sale for cheap), which is free now. At the time it was a good deal, and I use the heck out of Hexagon, so if Daz made a few extra dollars off of that Hexagon sale, I don't hold that against them.
Even the weekly PC+ freebies have been kind of 'meh'. Thank goodness I have all of those botanicals now though! If I ever do a greenhouse render...
These days, my impulse buying has been pretty much zeroed out, thanks to the new Daz sales team strategy. My routine is to check the daily sales page for any awesome deals, which are more anomolies than anything these days, maybe do a '% off or low to high' price sort on the main shop page, then move on to other stores. One other store in particular has had some pretty intriguing deals, for them anyways.
Ad for Daz3D.com, It's not too late for a change in course sales strategy wise, but I'm not holding my breath.
Looking at the sale this month, and 7 days in is just long enough to come to an early assessment. I will say that my spend is not usually great, definitely at the cheap[skate] hobby end, and shared with other hobbies. The prices do feel high and feel less good value for money than previous sales I have seen. I really don't feel that anything is wildly attractive for me to get, and the 'Knight's Armour' series is hyped far beyond value point. Anyway, I've a more appropriate sales slogan:
March Madness - You need to be mad to buy at these prices.
Regards,
Richard
Hah! I like that, that's a mood.
Another meh day - I've been waiting to see anything above '65%' in the banners but alas, no. There's a couple of nice things in the $5 bucket, but I can't help look at them and wonder if they could have been $2 in an alternative MM (Or MS) sale, which then makes me less interested in it.
I'd say I'm exhausted by the whole 'sale' but I'm still coming back each day to check it out. There's just something so... wierdly captivating about it.
The thing that gets me, ignoring anything about previous March Madness, is that the sale this month(week so far) has been the worst sales of the all of 2022 as far as I can tell.
Whether it's buy an insane amount of stuff to get a discount on a specfic item, or just a handful of things being on sale for less than a flash sale, assuming this contiunes all month I don't think i'll be checking in daily.
3 "grab bag" items in my cart at the moment. Don't know if I will get them. Would need to buy > 30$ of new releases to save $3 on the grab bag items. That's a no for sure.
Easily the worst.
So far, I've spent $9.90 in March Madness, and I'm wondering if I'll manage to use my $6 off $18.Daz+ card.
I'd have bought one of the $4.99 items yesterday, but I didn't have my phone to authorise the payment, so I added it to the basket, intending to check out later. I forgot, and now it's full price. With store credit, I'd back bought it there and then.
Do I regret it? Probably not, I don't need it after all.
